The Canadian Commission for UNESCO operates under the aegis of the Canada Council for the Arts. Its role is to act as a forum for governments and civil society, and to mobilize the participation of Canadian organizations and committed individuals in UNESCO's mandated areas: education, natural and social sciences, culture and communication and information.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is the only member of the United Nations System to have National Commissions performing this role in its Member States.

Message from the President to Members of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO

On October 31 2011, Member States of UNESCO voted to admit Palestine as a member of UNESCO. Media reports may have created some confusion about Canada’s continuing involvement in UNESCO, and the status of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO.

I have been assured that the Government of Canada has not decided to withdraw from UNESCO and will continue to meet all its legal obligations to the Organization. Similarly, the Canadian Commission for UNESCO will continue to work as it always has to involve government departments and agencies, institutions, non-governmental organizations, and individuals to advance education, the sciences, culture, communication and information in Canada and worldwide.

I will provide additional important information as it becomes available.

Sincerely,

Axel Meisen

President

The Canadian Commission for UNESCO was established by the Canada Council Act (1957) and functions under the aegis of the Canada Council for the Arts.
