Canada’s Permanent Delegation to UNESCO

Canada is one of 190 Member States which maintain a Permanent Delegation to UNESCO in Paris. UNESCO holds broad consultations on matters to related to its functioning and activities on a regular basis with the Permanent Delegations. The Permanent Delegation of Canada to UNESCO acts as the Government of Canada’s official representation to the UNESCO Secretariat. The Head of the Permanent Delegation is appointed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and holds the rank of Ambassador. Canada’s current Ambassador and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO is His Excellency Mr. André Bachand.

Friendship Group of Parliamentarians for UNESCO

In 1998, seventy-five Canadian parliamentarians, from all five existing political parties represented in Parliament, founded the Friendship Group of Parliamentarians for UNESCO. The friendship group aims to enhance parliamentarians’ knowledge of UNESCO programs in all parts of the world and to support Canada’s participation in UNESCO, through cooperation with the Canadian Commission for UNESCO.
